Layla Musselwhite spent her childhood on the road in the back of a van, soaking up the music of Europe’s blues festivals and America’s roadside clubs with her father Charlie Musselwhite. A guitar apprenticeship with Charlie followed, drawing from his direct lineage with the great players of the Mississippi Delta. Fascinated by these blues originators and the slide players in particular, Layla learned her roots, and her slide guitar style sounds like a lost B-side from the back of the record store. Her innovative, indie-roots guitar style is based on open tunings and pays homage to old-school blues as well as indie rock, and her whiskey & gravel-tinged voice voice has been described as “Cowboy Junkies meets Jewel meets Chrissie Hynde”. Layla’s songs draw from the “weird America” – that dark underbelly of hidden secrets and strange fairytales that has inspired songwriters from Robert Johnson to Big Mama Thornton, through to the present day. Don’t miss a chance to see this rising star, and a continuum in the history of great American music.
Layla Musselwhite’s new record of original music was recorded at Blade Studios in Louisiana., and features Brady Blade (Dave Matthews, Jewel) and Brian Blade (Emmylou Harris, Wayne Shorter) on drums, Doug Pettibone (John Mayer, Lucinda Williams), and Charlie Musselwhite.
